ActivitiesDiving and snorkelling are the two main activities for the sole reason that the corals and fish life, which attract countless divers, are amongst the most beautiful in the world. It is possible to obtain a Paddy Open Water diving certificate in a week. In addition to diving and snorkelling there are a host of other opportunities in the area for having an active holiday including:
You could also just rent a normal bike and ride around Dahab and the surrounding countryside, and of course hiking is always an option. The Sinai Peninsula is rich in both culture and nature. At the foot of Mount Mousa lies the world’s oldest Christian monastery, Saint Catherine’s. Legend has it that Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, in 330 AD ordered a monastery built on the spot where it is believed Moses saw the Burning Bush. Apart from being the world’s oldest, Saint Catherine’s monastery has a beautiful church and a unique collection of icons. After visiting the monastery it is an unforgettable experience to climb the 2,285 m high Mount Mousa. The ascent as well as the descent can be done on foot or on the back of a camel. The trip through the desert is an amazing experience. Here the scenery alternates between grand rock formations created by the eroding desert winds, gorges in the most beautiful colours and the pure desert sand with its green oases. It is a world still largely untouched by human hand and the inhabitants of the desert, as it has been for thousands of years, are the goat and camel herding Bedouin. It is also a possibility to continue the trip westward across the Sinai Peninsula and the Suez Canal to Cairo, the Egyptian capital on the African mainland. A tour of Cairo, with its 19 million inhabitants, tells you a lot about the history of Egypt. The most famous sites are probably the Cheops, Khaphren and Mecarinos pyramids at Giza along with the incredible treasures of the National Museum and the old town with the world’s largest bazaar, Kan El Kaneli. Cairo is a pulsating city with huge contrasts. A capital where modern business districts, skyscrapers and amazing hotels are a stark contrast to the very poor districts, which have neither refuse collection nor surfaced roads. Everywhere in the city modern vehicles mix with donkey carts and camels. With Dahab as a base it is possible to arrange trips to Upper Egypt, as the southern part of the country is known.
